El paisaje kárstico, o simplemente Karst, está formado por formas de relieve derivadas de la disolución de las sales que continen las rocas. Las rocas calizas, por ejemplo, tienen hasta un 95% de sales carbonatadas que son susceptibles a la disolución por el agua de lluvia que se infiltra en el suelo y a través de fracturas.
Estas fracturas se amplían a lo largo de miles o millones de años, formando cavernas o grutas en el interior. El Karst desarrollado en rocas fracturadas, frecuentemente constitue excelentes acuíferos del tipo confinado.
En el interior de las cavernas, es común encontrar espeleotemas, que son formas resultantes de la precipitación de las sales disueltas en el agua. Ejemplos de espelotemas son las estalactitas, estalagmitas y columnas, entre otras muchas y muy variadas formas.
En el Geoparque existen numerosas grutas asociadas a las extensas unidades de rocas calizas que cubren el territorio. Algunas de estas cavernas son muy accesibles yotras sólo pueden ser visitadas por espeleólogos profesionales.
Desgraciadamente, algunas grutas muestran un grado de deterioro avanzado. Es importante conservarlas y educar a los visitantes para dar a conocer su valor patrimonial y la necesidad de protegerlas.
The karst landscape, or simply karst, is formed by landforms derived from the dissolution of salts contained in rocks. Limestone rocks, for example, have up to 55% carbonate salts that are susceptible to dissolution by rainwater infiltrating the soil and through fractures. These fractures widen over thousands or millions of years, forming caverns or grottoes inside. Karst developed in fractured rocks frequently constitutes excellent confined aquifers.
Inside caves, it is common to find speleothems, which are forms resulting from the precipitation of salts dissolved in water. Examples of spelothems are stalactites, stalagmites and columns, among other very varied shapes.
In the Geopark there are numerous caves associated with the extensive limestone rock units that cover the territory. Some of these caverns are very accessible and others can only be visited by professional cavers.
Unfortunately, some caves show advanced degree of deterioration. It is important to conserve them and educate visitors to raise awareness of their value and the need to protect them.
