Maderas del Carmen Flora and Fauna Protection Area (APFFMC; part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve). The APFFMC was decreed in 1994 and declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2006. It houses representative ecosystems of the Coahuila desert, where endangered species of plants and animals live; among others, the black bear, the peregrine falcon, the eagle real, white-tailed deer, and the Carmen Mountain shrew deserve mention.
The Reserve extends to the Big Bend National Park, in the United States, being part of an important binational biological corridor for migrating species, including birds and the Monarch butterfly.
